Hello, My wife, Jeanne and I have been artists for most of our adult lives. Our most recent joint creative project is a map of “Western North Carolina”. Our first map of” North Eastern Georgia with Parts of North & South Carolina” was released in the summer of 2009. We found that our map filled a need for information about this great part of the country so we decided to make another map. In addition to making maps Jeanne is a fine art artist and I create custom “Wildwood” or “Live Edge” Style Furniture & Accessories like the easel and frame above. We often combine our talents to create unique pieces of art that we have available from time to time.
We moved from Florida to the mountains of Western North Carolina in 2008 and have been enjoying almost every part of our newly adopted home area. Moving from a warm climate, large metropolitan area to a cooler, less populated region in the mountains has been a big adjustment and has been very rewarding.
While in Florida I helped our community by serving as an elected public servant on our Downtown Development Board and later helped establish a Downtown Partnership where I served as its Chairman for several years. Our goal was to bring the Public and the Private Sectors together and accomplish economic revitalization in our area. This gave me some insight into the economic development activities that are so important to almost every community. When I moved to the mountains I soon realized that many people do not know about most of the great things that these regions have to offer. I decided to do something to help people find out more about these regions and how to locate some of the many interesting things to see and do in the mountains. This led me to the idea of creating a map for the region. As an artist I knew that I could design and make almost anything. My initial goal was to create a comprehensive map that would go far beyond any map that I had ever seen. I wanted the map to be a source of valuable information that can guide visitors and locals alike to all kinds of new and interesting things that they might not have known about before. I spent about 9 months figuring out how to do it and hand making the first map using more than 100 sources of information. Finally I completed it and we began distributing it in July 2009. Ever since then I have been delighted in the response that we have gotten and am looking forward to making more and more maps in the future. I have completed my second map which is of “Western North Carolina”. I am currently working on a new map of Southeast Tennessee.
While visiting with our son and daughter-in-law in Sept. of 2009 I was educated about blogging and soon realized that blogging would be a great way to share our experiences with others. Also we are hopeful that knowing more about the area will create a desire in others to visitour mountain region and enjoy some of the wonderful things that can be seen and done throughout the region.
I am new to the subject of blogging but over time I hope to become more proficient.
We look forward to sharing our experiences with you and to hearing from you as well.
Thanks for visiting our web site.

My husband and I have one of your wonderful maps. Today, we saw a framed one at a restaurant and want to know if frames are available for purchase. We are in Hayesville.
Carolyn, Thank you very much for purchasing one of our maps. Yes, we do a simple 3-1/2″ wide flat wood frame of pine. It can be finished in clear or stained just about any color. The framed maps are first laminated then mounted to hardboard. The cost of the framed maps is $85.00. We also have framed maps that have been decorated with things like trout, deer, birds, raccoons, pine cones or just about anything that you like. My wife is a very talented fine art artist and can paint just about anything.
We are going to be at the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee this week end (Oct 9th thru 17th) and will have several frames there to see if you are in the area. Thanks again, Dwight
We have a home in Mineral Bluff, Ga. and would like a map of that area. Would like one around 22 wide by 28 high color map. Do you have anything similar?
Beth, Thanks for your question. Our Northeast Georgia map covers the Mineral Bluff area. The map starts at Blue Ridge Ga, and covers an area that is about 90 miles wide and 40 miles high. The maps are all 24″ wide X 36″ high. Hope this helps.
We are greatly enjoying your map of NE GA and parts of the Carolinas and use it to discover wonderful places. do you intend to do a map further west into the Talking Rock, Ellijay areas of GA? wonderful waterfalls there, too!
Kathy, Thank you for your comments. I am delighted that you are making use of the many special features on the maps.
Regarding the idea of extending our mapping toward Ellijay, GA, Talking Rock and the Cahuttas. I am currently working on a map of Southeastern Tennessee that includes Knoxville, Oak Ridge and the Great Smokys. Over the next few months I am planning on enhancing the existing maps by creating city and town maps for the back of the folded versions. Time permitting I will see what I can do to do a map in the direction of your request. I completely agree that there are many great features in that area that need to be mapped.
We saw your map in a store and we want one. Now I see on your website that you have two versions..Will you be at the Fall Festival at the Ga. Mountain Fairgrounds next month? We’d like to see both maps and your frames before we decide which we want. If not, we will call you. we are in Hayesville also. thanks. Sally
Sally, Thanks for your interest in our maps. Yes we have a map of Northeast Georgia which includes a portion of North Carolina and South Carolina and one of a portion of Western North Carolina. There is a little overlap at Highlands and Cashiers.
I am not planning to be at the Ga Mtn Fairgrounds but will be at the John C Campbell Fall Festival this coming week-end. I will also be at the Gold Rush Festival in Dahlonega, Ga in two weeks. I will have several custom framed maps on hand at the festivals.
Please stop by if you are in the area.
I purchased a map from you in early June 2010 in Hayesville. I bought it for my husband but my father tried to claim it as his Father’s Day gift! We have enjoyed showing it to several friends and family members and they have used it to plan camping trips. We have used it to plan day trips around the North Georgia/NC area. We went to the No Name Cafe in September and had a really fun time with our three young children.
Thanks so much for this wonderful map!
Lana, Thank you for purchasing one of our maps for your husband. Sounds like your father might need one for himself as well. The No Name Cafe in Murphy is a great find. With three children you can’t go wrong with Ice Cream. Alan is the owner and he really pays attention to detail. I have tried to put places like this all over the map so that you can find unique and interesting places as you travel throughout the region.
We will be at the Gold Rush Festival in Dahlonega, Ga this week-end. Please stop by if you are in the area. Thanks, Dwight
Dwight:
We own one your maps and so far we and our guests are very pleased with it.
One thing that would be nice on your www site – is the ability to find out where you sell the maps locally – we have guests ask all the time about that – and all we know of is the Cotage Deli in N.C.
A list of where you sell your maps would be VERY helpful

David, Thank you for your comment. I have added a new page to the site that includes a partial list of places where you can find one of our Backroads maps. Many of these places also have one of our maps up as a display to shows which map they have available. I plan to increase our distribution this year so that it may be easier to find our maps.
